Camping in the Australian Outback

In this day and age its really hard to find proper wilderness – a place that has barely been impacted by capitalism and patriarchy and all of the political forces shaping the majority of our world today. These places – these slithers of land that somehow feel more real than the cities we live in – are rare and profound and an essential experience for all of us who call planet Earth home. How can we understand our home if we’ve only ever lived in the parts of it excessively designed by us?? Feel your wild nature by connecting with the wilderness! Learn what you’re made of, what you’re made for, not just what was made for you.

This overnight camping experience is designed for people who want to experience camping on the edge of the wilderness. We will be close enough to the infrastructure of the town of Alice Springs, but far enough that the landscape feels wild. Wildlife sightings are common, and the night sky is not bleached out by urban streetlights. We’ll share a dinner around the campfire, and talk about the unique flora, fauna, and night skies. Feel free to take yourself off for alone time at any point throughout the evening. Your swag platform is an awesome place to write, reflect, make art, or meditate.

Camping can feel scary the first time we do it, but its as natural as walking or talking or sleeping in a regular bed. In terms of our evolutionary history, we’ve spent more time sleeping outdoors than inside. This camp, situated on the very edge of the wilderness, offers support for nervous campers. Award winning tour guide & artist Anna Dakin has designed raised camping platforms situated around a central fire pit as a way to help you feel safe enough to immerse yourself in the experience. To sleep without walls between your body and the rest of the world is freeing – you learn what you’re capable of, and you’ll get to spend time watching the stars and listening to wild animals go about their lives.

Your overnight tour guide will help you to feel comfortable camping, share stories about this unique landscape, and point out some of the highlights of the night sky. Expect a delicious campfire dinner, comfortable swag style sleeping system, and a sense of community. Bring your sketchbook and journal and make the most of the beautiful location.

This transformative experience sits just 15 minutes outside of Alice Springs on a privately owned block of land at the edge of the wilderness.  Sleep under an ocean of stars cradled by ancient mountain ranges in Art Tours of Australia’s comfortable swags.

Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or in a small group, this boutique outback camping experience offers a rare chance to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with the natural world.

ITINERARY

*This itinerary is designed to give you a rough idea about what to expect. The order of things might change.

Your guide will pick you up from Alice Springs in the Art Tours minibus between 3-5pm. We can pick you up from anywhere in town – your guide will be in touch to confirm pick up locations on the day if we haven’t already got this information from you.

Arrive at our private campsite in the late afternoon and settle into your home for the evening.  Take in the unique desert surroundings as the light begins to shift across the landscape.

As the sun sets, we gather for an evening dining experience – campfire cooking and a hearty meal as the light changes on the surrounding mountain ranges.

As darkness falls, the desert reveals one of its greatest treasures: the night sky. With minimal light pollution, this is an ideal setting for stargazing and storytelling.

Optional experiences may include:

  • Guided discussions about the local environment and night sky
  • Night-time art making (Paint the Night by Moonlight workshop is an optional add on from winter 2027)
  • Quiet reflection or journalling under the stars

– Meals: Dinner

Your camping experience is both radical and comfortable – you’ll sleep without a tent, in a swag on raised 2-person sleeping platforms. Each person will be given an individual swag, which is a unique Australian sleep system. A kind of canvass bedroll, kitted out with a mattress, cosy duvet, pillow, sheets, and a blanket in winter.

Sleeping with no walls between you and the outdoors, as our ancestors did for the majority of our human history, is profound and inspiring. We acknowledge that this can feel uncomfortable for some – our expert wilderness guides are trained in supporting your experience with empathy and reassurance. This form of sleeping is safe, and provides opportunities to connect with nature on a deeper level, while looking up at Central Australias vast night skies.

Wake to the soft light of sunrise and the sounds of the desert coming to life. Enjoy a light breakfast before departing camp.

Leave feeling inspired and more deeply connected to the landscape.

– Meals: Light breakfast
